On the 19th of April 2016 volunteers from the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oświęcim played an active role in the initiative for civic education „Daffodils” initiated by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews (POLIN) to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
The daffodils are a symbol of remembrance, respect and hope. They are linked to Marek Edelman, the last commander of the Jewish Combat Organization. He received those flowers from an anonymous person every year on the occasion of the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He personally laid down a bouquet of yellow flowers every year on the 19th of April at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes – very often those were daffodils.
Volunteers of the IYMC and trainees from Daimler, doing an internship from the 18.-27.04.2016 at the IYMC and Auschwitz Jewish Centre, as part of a programme from Action Reconciliation Service for Peace, carried out numerous activities to commemorate this day. They handcrafted 180 paper-daffodils, which they handed out to workers and groups staying at the IYMC on this day. At noon they invited to the premier of the movie “There was no hope. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising” in the Szymański room of the IYMC. Then the youths headed to the city centre and handed out the daffodils to passers-by, encouraging them to carry them for the rest of the day.
