The 27th of January marks the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and the town of Oświęcim from the occupation of Nazi Germany. On this occasion, Janusz Chwierut, the mayor of Oświęcim, laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on behalf of the inhabitants, as well as at places and at memorials related to the period of World War II. In this way, he commemorated the events of the Second World War and paid tribute to the victims and liberators. The symbolic bouquet was also placed on behalf of Oświęcim’s partner cities, which took part in the celebrations each year. Due to the pandemic, this year’s celebrations had a modest setting and the delegations laid flowers individually. This time, the ceremony at the Auschwitz Museum will be online. The main theme of the celebration will be the fate of children in Auschwitz.
